Ingredients:

  • 1 lb (450g) flank steak, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 4 scallions, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, grated
  • 1-inch knob of ginger, peeled and grated
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (or any neutral oil such as canola oil)
  • 1 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 teaspoons rice vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional: Red chili pepper flakes and chopped cilantro for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the beef: Start by placing the thinly sliced flank steak in a shallow bowl. Add cornstarch and black pepper, tossing the beef to coat evenly. Let the steak marinate for a few minutes while you prep the rest of the ingredients.
  2. Mix the sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the rice vinegar, sesame oil, and soy sauce. Set aside.
  3. Cook the steak: Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the marinated steak in a single layer, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Stir-fry the steak for 2-3 minutes per side, or until it’s browned and almost cooked through. Remove the beef from the skillet and set it aside in a bowl.
  4. Cook the onions: Lower the heat to medium. Add the sliced onion to the same skillet and stir-fry until they become slightly caramelized and tender, about 4-5 minutes.
  5. Finish the stir-fry: Add the cooked beef back into the skillet, along with the chopped scallions, grated garlic, and ginger. Pour in the soy sauce mixture and stir everything together for another 1-2 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken. If desired, sprinkle with red chili flakes and cilantro for a bit of extra flavor and color.
  6. Serve: Remove from the heat and serve the onion steak stir-fry over a bowl of plain rice or with your favorite vegetables for a complete meal.

Enjoy this delicious, savory dish that’s perfect for any night of the week! ❤️
